Censorship in Manga
In 2009, Christopher Handley, a manga collector in Iowa, pleaded guilty to charges of possessing obscene manga, after a three-year ordeal which began when the U.S. Postal Service opened a package he received from Japan. Later that year, in Maryland, Dragon Ball was pulled from school and public libraries after a city councilman complained about the "disgusting" nudity. Censorship is a fact of life in mainstream manga, affecting everything from the Harem no Jutsu in Naruto to pot leaves in Shaman King. Why is manga censored in America, and what do the laws really say about what you can and can’t show? Former SHONEN JUMP Jason Thompson discusses the legal, moral and economic aspects of this complicated issue.

Martial Arts
Aikido SC-G
Aikido is a relatively new martial art founded In Japan by Master Morihei Ueshiba ( he lived from 1883 to 1969). A unique feature of Aikido is that one is never in conflict with one's opponent or training partner. The founder stressed that the goal of Aikido was not to defeat another. but to win over the discord within oneself. To train one's mind and body, to discover and fulfill one's purpose in life, to harmonize with the spirit of the Universe and realize that all people are members of one human family--these are the 'higher' goals of Aikldo. Aikido teaches an effective, positive way to handle situations, physical and psychological. without resorting to aggressive, competitive, or destructive tactics. Through the physical practice of Aikido, the student comes to appreciate and understand the spiritual aspect. During practice sessions, the partner-s work in harmony with each other, learning when and how to yield, how to lead and guide another's movements and how to down a person through non-resistive techniques. Aikido means —"the Way of Harmony or the Loving Way". The basic principle of Aikido movement is TURN when pushed, ENTER when pulled. All movement originates from the waist Stability, flexibility, calm control of mind and body are emphasized. Mind and body should be relaxed and alert. The founder stressed two important points concerning movement. In Alkido one is not in dualistic opposition with one's partner, but both are one unit in which both elements are under the control of one person. There is no form and no style in Aikido--the movement of Aikido is the movement of Nature whose secret is profound and lnfinite. Most of the joint techniques, such as those applied to wrist and elbow, flex the joint in the direction of natural bending. If resisted they may be painful. but result in no permanent injury.

instructor at Aikido of West Seattle - Pam Cooper has been training
